Lagos State University Suspends Academic Activities Amid Staff Union Strike

In a significant development, Lagos State University (LASU) has announced the suspension of all academic activities, including the much-anticipated second semester examinations for the 2024/2025 academic session. This decision follows an ongoing strike initiated by the university’s staff unions, showcasing the challenges faced within the education system.

The announcement was made after a virtual meeting of the university’s Senate, held on August 2, 2025. The statement, signed by Deputy Registrar Mrs. Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, indicated that the strike was launched by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of LASU’s staff unions, which comprises the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), the Senior Staff Association of Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

Importantly, the university management clarified that the current industrial action is aimed specifically at the Lagos State Government rather than the institution’s administration. According to the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, their core demands are directed at the state’s authorities, emphasizing the need for urgent government engagement to address these concerns.

In a show of goodwill, the university management has undertaken several attempts to mediate between the unions and the government. A crucial meeting was held on August 1, chaired by Mr. Olabode Agoro, the Lagos State Head of Service, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss the pressing issues. Further consultations are planned for August 7, promising hope for a resolution.

While the discussions are ongoing, LASU has taken precautionary measures by suspending all academic activities. The much-anticipated examinations, originally set to start on August 4, have been put on hold until further notice. In light of these circumstances, students living in university-hosted accommodations have been advised to vacate all hostels located across the university’s Ojo, LASUCOM, Epe, and Badagry campuses by 6:00 a.m. on the day the examinations were initially scheduled.

The Senate has urged both students and staff to remain calm and conduct themselves lawfully during this uncertain period. “We are LASU, We are Great!” the statement concluded, reflecting the institution’s commitment to unity and resilience in the face of challenges.

As stakeholders await the outcome of the upcoming consultations, the focus remains on fostering a collaborative approach between LASU and the government to ensure a swift resolution to the strike, ultimately prioritizing the education of students.

This situation at LASU shines a light on broader issues facing educational institutions in Nigeria, where labor unrest often poses significant hurdles. It serves as a reminder of the importance of dialogue and cooperation in achieving sustainable progress across the sector.
