Exciting Launch at UNILAG: Celebrating Knowledge with General Studies Day!
In a vibrant celebration of academia and camaraderie, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) recently held its inaugural General Studies Day, an event designed to highlight the importance of General Studies courses in students’ educational journeys. The much-anticipated event showcased a quiz competition among the various faculties, with the Faculty of Law clinching the prestigious title as the first champion in this new tradition.
The competition was held last week at the university’s Akoka campus and saw participation from 13 faculties, including the Directorate of Distance Learning Institute. Each faculty sent two representatives to tackle a series of thought-provoking questions covering topics from Nigerian Peoples and Culture to Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation Studies. The Faculty of Science and Faculty of Environmental Science rounded out the podium, securing second and third places, respectively, while other faculties made impressive efforts, displaying a solid range of knowledge and teamwork.
As part of the celebration, Professor Aderonke Lawal-Are, Director of the General Studies (GST) Centre, addressed the audience, emphasizing that GST courses are more than just academic requirements; they play a vital role in shaping versatile leaders. “Education is not merely about a specific discipline but about fostering holistic development,” she remarked, underlining the importance of adaptability and critical thinking in today’s dynamic world.
The winning Faculty of Law was awarded a trophy along with a cash prize of N200,000, while the second and third-placed faculties received N150,000 and N100,000, respectively, in recognition of their spirited performances.
In an inspiring turn, Ifeoluwa Oyedele, President of the UNILAG Alumni Association, also took the stage to stress the enduring value of General Studies education. He noted that knowledge gained from these courses would accompany students throughout their lives, shaping their worldviews and helping them succeed no matter their chosen path. As the university embraces a new academic year, he encouraged students to view General Studies as a golden opportunity for growth rather than a hurdle.
Another highlight of the day was an engaging role-play presentation by students who embodied African legends, illustrating their legacies and contributions to society. This activity was both educational and entertaining, further bridging the gap between history and contemporary academic pursuits.
To keep pace with evolving educational standards, UNILAG also announced the addition of six new GST courses in alignment with the National Universities Commission’s Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards. This move reflects the university’s commitment to providing comprehensive and relevant education.
