In a heartwarming initiative aimed at improving educational facilities, the Helping Hand Community, a prominent NGO, has recently completed a significant renovation project at Epetedo High School on Lagos Island. This project included refurbishing the school’s toilets, the Vice Principal’s office, staff room, and library, significantly enhancing the learning environment for students and teachers alike.
Oladimeji Faizol Awofusi, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Helping Hand Community, expressed the organization’s commitment to uplifting the educational standards in the community. “After successfully renovating Dolphin High School and Stadium High School in Surulere, we felt the need to extend our efforts to Epetedo. The school reached out to us with specific needs, and we eagerly took on the challenge,” Awofusi shared.
The transformation of the school took only six weeks, proving the dedication and efficiency of the Helping Hand team. Awofusi noted, “While securing project approvals took some time, we believe that streamlining this process could further empower NGOs to make a quicker impact on schools in need.”
In addition to the renovations, the organization also rewarded exceptional students with cash prizes, free school uniforms, and entry passes to their well-received back-to-school program. This initiative, set to launch in September, aims to equip students with essential supplies such as books, school bags, hygiene products, and offer medical check-ups, ensuring that every child has a prosperous start to the academic year.
Principal Afunwape Babatunde extolled the crucial impact of Helping Hand’s intervention, stating, “The improvements mean everything to our school community. With enhanced toilet facilities and a properly equipped library, our students can focus on learning in a healthy environment.” He also voiced his appeal for more collaboration between NGOs and the government to create sustainable and conducive learning spaces across the region.
The need for such collaboration is pressing, with many schools eager for further renovations and support. Principal Babatunde concluded with a call to action, urging other NGOs to follow in Helping Hand’s footsteps and foster partnerships that can significantly benefit schools in need.
With ongoing initiatives like these, it’s clear that community-driven programs can have a profound impact on education in Nigeria. Through joint efforts, the future of these institutions looks promising as they strive to provide a better environment for learning and growth.
