Join Us in Celebrating International Nelson Mandela Day in Soweto with COSATU Gauteng!

In an inspiring act of community service, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in Gauteng has announced a significant event to honor International Nelson Mandela Day. On July 18, 2025, from 9 a.m., volunteers will gather to clean the open space between Sizwile School for the Deaf and Forte School in Dobsonville, Soweto. This initiative not only serves to celebrate the legacy of the beloved global icon, Nelson Mandela, but also embodies the spirit of unity and community action that he championed throughout his life.

This cleanup is more than just a simple task; it represents a collective effort to enhance the living environment of the local community and inspire others to engage in meaningful activities that make a positive difference. COSATU’s commitment to honoring Mandela’s legacy is commendable, especially as it leads up to the federation’s 40th Anniversary celebration, scheduled for December 6 at Dobsonville Stadium. The anniversary event promises to be a significant milestone that highlights COSATU’s contributions to labor rights and social justice over the past four decades.

Participants in the July 18 event will be coming together not just to clean, but to foster a sense of community and pride in their neighborhood—qualities that Mandela himself advocated for. Organizers encourage all locals to join in and reflect on Mandela’s call for action, service, and commitment to the betterment of others. The movement emphasizes that everyone can play a role in uplifting their community and encourages a spirit of collaboration that transcends individual differences.

For anyone interested in joining the cleanup or learning more about COSATU’s initiatives, reach out to the provincial leadership. Amos Monyela, the Provincial Chairperson, can be contacted at 079 493 5002, while Provincial Secretary Louisah Modikwe is available at 066 182 2402 or 082 297 2659.

As Nelson Mandela famously said, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others.” This event in Dobsonville will undoubtedly reflect those very values and serve as a beacon of hope.
