“Maersk Discoverer Sets Record for Deepest Well Drilled in Egypt!”

On May 5, 2015, history was made in the Mediterranean Sea as the Maersk Discoverer drilling rig successfully completed what is heralded as the deepest well ever drilled in Egypt and the longest in the Mediterranean to date. This remarkable feat not only showcases the prowess of modern drilling technology but also highlights the potential of the East Nile Delta region as a significant player in the global energy market.

The Maersk Discoverer, a sixth-generation semi-submersible rig operated by Maersk Drilling, undertook this groundbreaking venture approximately 923 meters beneath the water’s surface, situated around 80 kilometers north of Damietta City. Just 15 kilometers north of the Salamat offshore facilities, this strategic location put the team in ideal proximity for resource extraction.

BP, which holds 100% equity in this discovery, identified an impressive 50 meters of gas pay within high-quality Oligocene sandstones. This significant find speaks volumes about the untapped resources within the Mediterranean region, previously considered less than favorable for exploration.

In an impressive show of efficiency, the Maersk Discoverer drilled the Atoll-1 well in just 234 days—62 days ahead of BP’s planned budgetary framework estimate (AFE). The quick turnaround not only reduced costs substantially but also demonstrated the effectiveness of the coordinated efforts among the drilling team. Allan McColl, the Rig Leader, emphasized that the success stemmed from their meticulous adherence to the ‘Plan Do Study Act’ methodology, coupled with the insights gained from previous well projects, namely Geb and Salamat.

Unit Director Thomas Falk expressed immense pride in the collaborative culture fostered between BP and Maersk Drilling. “After all the effort everyone on the BP/Maersk Drilling team has put into building a strong joint performance culture, this was a well-deserved achievement that everyone should be proud of,” he remarked. Falk further added that this accomplishment exemplifies the mutual value creation they wish to continue pursuing in future drilling contracts.

This milestone not only reinforces Egypt’s potential as an emerging energy hub but also paves the way for future collaborations in the oil and gas sector that could benefit the region’s economy substantially. With the Mediterranean’s resources coming to light, the possibilities for enhanced energy security and investment in local infrastructure appear promising.

As the waves of progress roll in, one can’t help but wonder how this new chapter for Egypt’s energy landscape will unfold, setting the stage for exciting developments in the years to come.
