In an exciting development for the Zambian mining sector, GoviEx Uranium, a prominent player listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, has welcomed Deogratias M. Bukunkwe as its new project and commissioning metallurgist for the Muntanga uranium project. This strategic appointment highlights GoviEx’s commitment to advancing its operations and moving closer to production, targeted for 2028, contingent on successful project financing.
Bukunkwe, a dedicated Zambian national, is no stranger to the uranium industry, bringing with him over 25 years of extensive experience in process startup and operational management. His impressive resume includes significant roles in high-profile uranium projects, such as leading the startup operations at the Kayelekera and Langer Heinrich mines. Just recently, he played a pivotal role as commissioning manager at Freeport-McMoRan’s Grasberg gold and copper cleaner concentrator in Indonesia, showcasing his ability to excel in demanding environments.
As GoviEx ramps up its efforts for the Muntanga project, Bukunkwe’s initial focus will be on constructing a comprehensive pre-commissioning framework. This crucial step is aimed at ensuring the project is fully prepared and appealing for due diligence by potential lenders. By designing a robust operational blueprint, GoviEx aims to assure investors of the project’s readiness and viability.
“Bringing Deogratias on board significantly strengthens our technical capabilities,” said GoviEx CEO Daniel Major. He emphasized the importance of a strong technical team as the company transitions from the feasibility stage to securing financing for the project. By doing so, he hopes to instill confidence in banking partners regarding GoviEx’s ability to execute the project efficiently and safely.
For Bukunkwe, the opportunity to contribute to the development of the Muntanga project in his homeland is a significant milestone. He expressed his excitement: “My career has revolved around guiding plants to production, and I am eager to implement my expertise to ensure a safe and high-performing project that benefits all stakeholders.” His commitment to collaboration with prospective lenders underscores the importance of a solid pre-commissioning program that validates the project’s potential.
As the Muntanga uranium project gears up for its next phase, GoviEx Uranium is poised to make a substantial impact not just on Zambia’s mining landscape but also on the global uranium market. With a dedicated team and a clear vision, the future looks bright for GoviEx and its stakeholders.
