This past May 17th marked a historic milestone for students of the Yucaipa Adult School (YAS) as they celebrated their very first prom event at the Yucaipa Elks Lodge. Aptly themed “Midnight Elegance,” the enchanting evening was a celebration of joy and togetherness, providing a much-deserved opportunity for many students who had never participated in such an event before.
Tracy Marrs, a dedicated teacher at YAS, expressed her pride in the event, stating, “This milestone event was entirely inspired by our students and made possible through the combined efforts of both students and staff.” She was recently honored as the YAS Teacher of the Year, a testament to her commitment to fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment.
One of the driving forces behind the prom was student Patricia Ortiz, who believes that adults also deserve the thrill of such celebrations. Ortiz aptly said, “An adult prom is proof that fun doesn’t have an age limit, because some nights deserve a little extra sparkle.” The enthusiasm was echoed by fellow student Vania Gabon, who revealed how the idea for the prom initially came about. “To our surprise and joy, the principal agreed,” Gabon recalled, reminiscing about the incredible atmosphere filled with joy and harmony throughout the evening.
The prom was designed for students over the age of 18, with many participants belonging to the 30-60 age range. The diversity of the student body added a unique touch to the occasion, allowing for a broad spectrum of experiences to be celebrated. To ensure that everyone felt confident and beautiful, YAS partnered with Oak View High School for a free dress and suit event in the weeks leading up to the prom.
Guests indulged in an array of delicious desserts, from mini fruit tarts to savory finger foods like salami rosettes, mozzarella, and basil. Adding to the festive atmosphere was a lively mocktail bar, a DJ spinning energetic tunes, and a photo booth capturing smiles and memories throughout the night.
Yucaipa Adult School is dedicated to offering vital programs, including ESL, citizenship preparation, and math and English general prep classes, alongside high school and GED programs. Their mission transcends education, proving that learning and joy can harmoniously coexist at any age.
As YAS continues to create such enriching experiences for its students, it’s clear that the lessons of joy and community are just as important as academics. The inaugural prom not only celebrated individuality and confidence but also forged lasting memories that will inspire future generations.
