Youth Empowerment at the Forefront of the Blue Economy: Insights from the Seychelles
In an exciting showcase of innovative ideas and youth empowerment, the Seychelles recently participated in a pivotal high-level side event titled “Beyond Sustainability: The Promise of a Regenerative Blue Economy – From Concept to Practice” held at the UN Ocean Conference in Nice. This event was co-hosted by prominent organizations including the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the French Development Agency (AFD), and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
The Seychelles, renowned as a trailblazer in the Blue Economy, underscored the unique capabilities of small island developing states (SIDS) in spearheading initiatives that prioritize both ecological balance and community engagement. Gabriella Gonthier, the senior international cooperation officer for the Seychelles’ Department of Blue Economy, represented her nation on a panel dedicated to translating the principles of a regenerative blue economy into impactful actions.
Gonthier’s passionate address highlighted the critical role that youth play in shaping a sustainable and thriving future for our oceans. “The exclusion of youth in the ocean economy is not a talent gap; it is a structural gap, and ultimately, a choice,” she asserted. With more than 1.8 billion young people across the globe, a significant portion of whom reside in coastal and island regions, she argued that their contributions should be embraced rather than overlooked. “They are not just passive stakeholders; they are the innovators, implementers, and community leaders of tomorrow,” she added, reinforcing the importance of incorporating their ideas and energy into ocean-related development.
The Department of Blue Economy in Seychelles firmly believes that empowering youth is not merely an afterthought, but a core pillar of the country’s Blue Economy Roadmap. Through its dedicated Programme Development Section, the department has actively initiated projects aimed at enhancing ocean literacy, raising public awareness, and fostering youth entrepreneurship, all essential for sustainable development.
As discussions progress following this event, insights gained will contribute to sessions such as UNOC Panel 6, which focuses on advancing sustainable ocean-based economies and bolstering coastal community resilience. By ensuring that no one is left behind in these initiatives, the Seychelles aims to reinforce global commitments to Sustainable Development Goal 14—preserving oceans, seas, and marine resources.
In conclusion, the Seychelles continues to lead by example, championing youth involvement in the Blue Economy and demonstrating a commitment to sustainable practices that benefit both people and the planet. It’s a shining testament to the power of youth and the integral role they play in safeguarding our oceans for future generations.
