Building Bridges: A New Era of Connectivity in PNG

In an exciting development aimed at boosting both transportation and communication infrastructure, the Department of Works and Highway (DoWH) and PNG DataCo have officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU). This strategic partnership, formed on Friday, is set to implement key government policies that will reshape how Papua New Guinea (PNG) connects its roads with telecommunication networks for years to come.

DoWH Secretary Gibson Holemba shared the vision behind this MoU, emphasizing a groundbreaking approach to infrastructure development. With each road constructed, the plan includes running communication cables along the national highway network. Holemba stated, “During road construction, we can also install conduits and cable lines so it is easier for DataCo to carry out their work.” This innovative strategy not only maximizes resources but also fosters a more seamless integration between critical infrastructure.

One of the significant initiatives outlined in their agreement is the Connect PNG Telecommunication System Project, which features an aerial fiber network distribution strategy. This project aligns with the broader Connect PNG Program, which seeks to enhance both physical and digital connectivity across the nation. Holemba noted that this collaboration is pivotal in realizing the government’s vision for improved nationwide connectivity, bridging gaps between remote locations and urban centers.

Paul Komboi, CEO of PNG DataCo, emphasized the importance of partnerships in their operations. Celebrating a decade of success, DataCo has thrived on strategic collaborations with institutions like the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) and PNG Power Ltd (PPL). “We will look to this form of partnership moving forward, as it lays the groundwork for our relationship,” he said. Komboi also acknowledged the challenges posed, particularly in remote areas such as the Highlands and New Guinea Islands, where building infrastructure can be a daunting task.

By combining the strengths of both organizations, they anticipate a more unified approach to deploying high-speed digital infrastructure across the archipelago. Komboi highlighted, “We depend on the road network as much as DoWH depends on the digital network that we are building for the country, so that interdependency is essential.”

As PNG moves forward with this groundbreaking partnership, it sets a precedent for future collaborations across the region. This initiative not only aims to enhance the country’s transport capabilities but also strives to provide communities with greater access to communication technologies – ensuring a more connected and progressive Papua New Guinea.

Stay tuned as we follow the journey of this remarkable partnership, with updates on how it unfolds and impacts the lives of many.
