Basel Boosts Cargo Capacity: Swissport’s Exciting Expansion!

Swissport Boosts Freight Operations at EuroAirport Basel–Mulhouse–Freiburg

In an exciting development for the logistics sector, Swissport has recently unveiled an expansion of its freight operations at EuroAirport Basel–Mulhouse–Freiburg, adding an impressive 800 square meters of new freight space. This strategic enhancement comes as a direct response to the growing demand from existing carrier networks, underscoring Swissport’s commitment to evolving with the needs of the industry.

EuroAirport, strategically located at the crossroads of France, Germany, and Switzerland, has established itself as a vital logistics hub that facilitates global imports into Europe and serves as a key point for pharmaceutical exports from Switzerland. The expansion not only increases the facility’s capacity but also aims to enhance the efficiency and speed of cargo handling services, which is crucial for businesses relying on fast and reliable logistics.

“The addition of new freight space at EuroAirport is a significant milestone for Swissport,” said Andreas Behnke, Head of Cargo for Switzerland, Italy, and France, and Station Manager of Swissport Basel. “As an expert in air freight, we continuously adapt our logistics capacities to meet demand with excellence and efficiency, while upholding the highest safety and security standards.”

In a bid to optimize operations, Swissport has also introduced several streamlined processes tailored to the airport’s unique bi-national structure. This initiative is expected to facilitate faster last-mile distribution and improve overall cargo handling. With these improvements, Swissport is well-positioned to meet the rising import volumes that are characteristic of today’s dynamic freight market.

In 2024, Swissport achieved a landmark milestone by handling five million tonnes of air cargo across its 117 centers worldwide. This remarkable accomplishment was fueled by the refurbishment of a cargo warehouse in Johannesburg and the opening of a third air cargo center in Liège, Belgium, alongside enhancements made to the ‘Flower Corridor’ facilities in Amsterdam and Liège.

As global trade continues to evolve, Swissport remains at the forefront of the logistics industry, setting new benchmarks for excellence in service delivery. With the newly expanded operations at EuroAirport, the company is not just keeping pace with demand but is also laying the groundwork for future growth and innovation.
