Sudanese Student Osman Abdullah Shines at London Marathon, Raising Over £1,000 for Charity
In an inspiring display of resilience and determination, 19-year-old Osman Abdullah from Ipswich made headlines for successfully completing the London Marathon on Sunday. Having moved to the UK from Sudan just two years ago, Osman has embraced his new life, aided significantly by the YMCA, which has helped him adapt to his surroundings and pursue his education.
Currently enrolled in a program for English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) and mathematics at Suffolk New College, Abdullah tackled the challenging 26.2-mile course through the capital, raising an impressive £1,163 for a charity close to his heart. His journey from a newcomer in a foreign land to a marathon runner is nothing short of remarkable.
“The atmosphere was electric,” Osman shared after crossing the finish line. “I only crossed the start line at 10:20 am and had to navigate through a sea of participants, but the cheers from the crowd kept me motivated. It was truly an amazing experience!”
At the 18-mile mark, Osman faced a moment of fatigue, but the rigorous training he had undertaken urged him onward. “I just kept reminding myself of all the hard work I had put in, and when I saw Buckingham Palace, I knew I could push through. I felt an overwhelming sense of pride when I finished,” he recounted, a smile lighting up his face.
Osman’s commitment to running has not only been a personal journey; it was also a team effort made possible through the support of his college. The staff generously provided him with branded training kits and even new running shoes. “I am incredibly grateful to Suffolk New College and the YMCA for their unwavering support,” he expressed.
Craig Shimmon, the Head of Marketing at Suffolk New College, couldn’t hide his admiration for Osman’s accomplishment. “What an incredible performance by Osman! Many of us were glued to the screens, hoping to catch a glimpse of him in the race. He represented our college and the YMCA brilliantly and made us all very proud.”
As the school year continues and Osman forges ahead with his studies, this marathon experience will surely serve as a source of inspiration not just for him, but for fellow students and the wider community. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of community, and the potential to transform challenges into opportunities for success.
