Lagos Welcomes 130,000 Households into Game-Changing Cash Transfer Initiative!

Lagos State Initiates Cash Transfer Program for Economic Relief

In a proactive response to recent economic reforms, the Lagos State Government has successfully enrolled 130,000 households in a conditional cash transfer program with an aim to alleviate financial pressures faced by residents. This pivotal initiative, supported by the Federal Government, promises each enrolled household a financial aid of N75,000, providing a much-needed lifeline during these challenging economic times.

During a press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, Ope George, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, laid out the details of this ambitious program. He noted that the enrolled households have now integrated their National Identification Numbers (NINs) into the Lagos State Single Social Register—a vital task that forms part of a broader National Social Register.

Kicking off on April 9, 2025, this program spans all 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas in Lagos. “The Federal Government has stipulated that all beneficiaries on the National Register must have current records, including their NINs and geographical locations,” George emphasized, demonstrating the government’s commitment to transparency and efficiency.

The updates are not just bureaucratic necessities; they are crucial for the seamless distribution of cash grants while minimizing fraud and preventing duplication. This initiative is a collaborative effort. The Lagos State Operation Coordinating Unit, along with Community-Based Targeting Teams, mobilized effectively to achieve significant milestones, particularly in neighborhoods like Ikorodu, Alimosho, and Mushin.

As it stands, Ikorodu leads with 16,418 households enrolled, followed closely by Alimosho with 14,964 and Mushin with 10,712. George highlights the importance of this initiative, stating, “It aims to offer vital support to the most vulnerable residents who are enduring economic hardships following recent fiscal reforms including the removal of the fuel subsidy and exchange rate adjustments.”

In a reassuring conclusion, George confirmed that the state would persist in updating the register to include more households, ensuring that even more residents access both state and federal assistance programs. This initiative exemplifies Lagos State’s dedication to enhancing the welfare of its citizens, promising a positive impact in a time of economic shifts.
