Lagos Revamps Social Register: Enhancing Benefits with National Identity Integration!

In an exciting move towards enhanced social protection, the Lagos State Government has launched an ambitious initiative to update its Single Social Register by integrating it with the National Identity Number (NIN). This strategic endeavor is designed to ensure that welfare programs effectively reach the most vulnerable residents in the state.

The update commenced on April 9, 2025, and spans all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) across Lagos. The goal is clear: to bolster the National Social Register (NSR) as directed by President Bola Tinubu. At a recent press conference, Ope George, the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, underscored the transformative nature of this initiative. “Through this integration, we are not only building a robust and inclusive register but also ensuring that resources are delivered to the right people at the right time for the right impact,” he stated.

Presently, the Lagos State Single Social Register contains data on about 688,759 heads of households, which represents over 2.68 million individuals. The integration of NINs serves multiple purposes, primarily enhancing transparency and validating the credibility of the register—something that George emphasized as essential for effective social protection.

In less than a month since the initiative’s launch, the Social Protection Coordination Department, in collaboration with community teams, has successfully linked NINs to over 130,000 household entries. This illustrates the initiative’s momentum and reflects its commitment to leave no resident behind in accessing vital social intervention programs.

Furthermore, Olayinka Ojo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, echoed the significance of this update, describing it as a “clarion call” for all Lagos residents to engage in the process. “This integration is critical for accurately identifying and verifying beneficiaries for social intervention programs. It enhances accuracy, eliminates duplication, and ensures inclusivity,” she remarked, reaffirming the government’s commitment to transparency and good governance.

Despite encountering some challenges, such as household apathy, the Lagos State Government is optimistic about the future. With over 710,000 households currently registered, many are already reaping benefits from programs like the National Cash Assistance Scheme (NCAS).

As Lagos State embarks on this path to refine its social protection framework, it invites all residents to actively participate in the update process. By doing so, the government aims to lay a solid foundation for improved service delivery and ultimately enhance the quality of life for all residents.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in social governance in Nigeria, with potential positive implications for the vulnerable and the wider community. Together, through collaboration and engagement, Lagos is striving for inclusivity and prosperity.
