Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Reopens Urology Program with New Specialists

In a heartening development for residents of Grande Prairie, the urology program at Grande Prairie Regional Hospital has officially reopened its doors, bolstered by the recruitment of three skilled urologists. This revitalization of services marks a significant leap forward in healthcare accessibility for the community, ensuring that residents can receive essential medical care closer to home.

The urology program had partially reopened in the fall of 2023 with the arrival of urologic surgeon Dr. Sai Vangala. Following him, two additional specialists joined the team: Dr. Ahmed Kotb, a urologist and uro-oncologist, and Dr. Oguz Ozcan, a general urologist. Their collective expertise and experience have expanded the range of services offered, greatly enhancing patient care in the region.

Local MLA Nolan Dyck expressed his enthusiasm for the program’s relaunch, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on the community. “The return of urology services at the hospital is fantastic news. With these three urologists now among us, residents will have access to comprehensive care right on their doorstep,” Dyck stated, marking this development as a win for health accessibility in Grande Prairie.

Supporting these sentiments, MLA for Grande Prairie-Wapiti and Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Health North, Ron Weir, highlighted the benefits that these new physicians bring to the area. “Residents can look forward to specialized care for various urological conditions. The continuous improvement in healthcare access reflects our commitment to meeting the needs of our community,” Weir explained.

The three new specialists bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program. Dr. Vangala completed his medical training at the University of London and underwent his residency at the prestigious University of Toronto. Dr. Kotb, who began his medical career in Egypt, boasts over two decades of clinical experience, having earned his PhD in epidemiology from McGill University and holds qualifications in both Europe and Canada. Meanwhile, Dr. Ozcan hails from Turkey, possessing 18 years of experience and certification from the European Board of Urology.

This is undoubtedly an exciting time for healthcare in Grande Prairie. With a full-service urology program now back in action, residents can expect an improvement in their overall health outcomes and quality of life. As the community continues to grow, so too does its potential for outstanding healthcare services.
