UNILAG Revamps Mass Communication Program for a Dynamic Learning Experience!

Exciting changes are underway at the University of Lagos (UNILAG)! In a bold move to bolster academic excellence, UNILAG has officially restructured its Mass Communication Department, transforming it into a comprehensive Faculty of Communication and Media Studies. This ambitious initiative aims to elevate specialization and professionalism in media-related fields, making UNILAG a forerunner in communication education.

In a memo dated March 6, 2025, from the Registrar’s office, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, announced the commencement of this groundbreaking implementation. The newly formed Faculty comprises three distinct departments: Mass Communication, Public Relations and Advertising, and Journalism, Broadcasting and Media Studies. This restructuring paves the way for a variety of specialized programs, including Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees in areas like Mass Communication, Public Relations, Advertising, Journalism, and Broadcasting.

The move has been met with enthusiasm from the academic community. Prof. Oloruntola Sunday, the Head of Department, expressed his excitement in an interview, noting that the first classes under this innovative structure will kick off in October 2025. He highlighted that this decision was in alignment with recommendations from the National Universities Commission (NUC), which has recently revised the curriculum standards for various programs, including those in Mass Communication.

This unbundling is not just about creating new courses; it is also about fostering a more robust academic environment. Prof. Sunday mentioned that the growth of the faculty would necessitate the recruitment of new faculty members, ensuring that students receive the quality education they deserve. He assured that the department is well-equipped with modern facilities to support the diverse needs of the incoming programs, allowing for a rich learning experience.

As the media landscape continually evolves, UNILAG’s proactive approach to education serves as an inspiring model for universities across Nigeria and beyond. Such initiatives not only enhance the quality of education within the country but also prepare students for successful careers in the dynamic field of communication.

Stay tuned for more updates from UNILAG, as they embark on this exciting new journey of educational innovation!
