Lagos Sets Exciting Date for Local Government Elections!

Lagos State Gears Up for Local Government Elections – Mark Your Calendars!

The anticipation is building in Lagos State as the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has officially announced that local government elections will take place on July 12, 2025. This pivotal announcement was made by Tope Ojo, the Head of Public Affairs at LASIEC, during a recent press briefing.

Local government elections are a critical aspect of Lagos State’s democracy, determining the leadership for 57 council chairmanship positions and 376 councillorship seats across 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs). Given the size and diversity of Lagos, these elections have significant implications for local governance and community representation.

In a proactive move, LASIEC has outlined a timeline for the electoral process, stating that if a rerun is necessary, the supplementary poll is scheduled for July 19. This structured approach not only highlights LASIEC’s commitment to transparency but also ensures that voters can expect a stable transition of power with no gaps in local governance.

According to Ojo, the announcement of the official Notice of Election marks the beginning of electoral activities. Political parties are now encouraged to visit LASIEC and collect nomination forms for their candidates. This clear call to action signals an important moment for political engagement as parties prepare to rally their supporters and promote their platforms.

In an effort to foster a collaborative electoral environment, LASIEC is also organizing a meeting with all registered political parties on Tuesday. This provides a valuable opportunity for dialogue about the electoral process and the expectations that govern it.

Furthermore, detailed Election Guidelines are set to be published by April 17, providing a roadmap for candidates, including nomination timelines and campaign schedules. Political campaigns and rallies will officially kick off on April 18 and will run until July 9, giving candidates a generous window to connect with voters and articulate their visions for local governance.

LASIEC’s Chairman, Justice Ayotunde Phillips (rtd), emphasized the Commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and inclusive elections. She assured that all political parties, irrespective of size, will have a fair chance to present their candidates and policies. This inclusive approach is crucial for strengthening democracy in Lagos State.

As Lagosians prepare for this significant electoral event, the importance of civic engagement cannot be overstated. It’s a chance for residents to voice their choices and shape the future of their communities. So, mark your calendars and get involved!
