Lagos State Gears Up for Local Government Elections: Key Dates and Details

Exciting times are ahead for Lagos State as the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has officially announced the date for local government elections. Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 12, 2025, as this marks a pivotal moment in the state’s democratic journey. Political campaigns will kick off just a couple of months earlier, starting on Friday, April 18, 2025, allowing candidates to engage with their constituents and share their visions.

In alignment with Section 21(I) of the LASIEC Law 2008 (as amended), LASIEC has released the Notice of Election, inviting all eyes to focus on the electoral process for the vital positions of Chairmen and Councilors across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs), 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), and 376 wards. This announcement signifies the official start of the electoral preparations that are sure to invigorate the political landscape.

A statement from Mr. Tope Ojo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit at LASIEC, emphasized the importance of this electoral period, especially as the current local government administrations complete their terms. In this spirit of transition, the Notice of Election lays the groundwork for what promises to be a highly engaging election season.

For those interested in the mechanics of the election, LASIEC has thoughtfully scheduled a run-off or re-run election for Saturday, July 19, 2025, should it be necessary. But there’s more! Political parties looking to nominate their candidates are encouraged to visit the Commission’s headquarters to secure the necessary forms from the start of the election cycle.

Additionally, important timelines to note include a strategic meeting set for Tuesday, April 15, 2025, between LASIEC and the registered political parties, as well as the publication of detailed election guidelines on Thursday, April 17, 2025. Campaigns will officially commence on April 18 and will continue until July 9, 2025, providing ample time for candidates to connect with voters.

One key date for political parties is the submission window for nomination forms, which opens on June 18, 2025, and closes just one week later on June 25, 2025. This structured timeline is aimed at ensuring transparency and organization during the election process.

Hon. Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), the Chairman of LASIEC, has expressed the Commission’s unwavering commitment to conducting free, fair, inclusive, and credible elections in line with global best practices. Her assurance to all political parties about a level playing field affirms the importance of fair competition in this democratic exercise.

With so much on the horizon, all eyes will be on Lagos State as political aspirants and parties prepare to engage with the community. As we approach this important electoral period, the spirit of democracy and participation will surely take center stage. Stay tuned for further updates as we draw closer to the elections!
