Empowering Tomorrow's Innovators: Lagos State's STEAM Mentorship Series Launches

In a vibrant event held at Ikeja Senior High School, Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Hamzat, inspired secondary school students to embrace a growth mindset and recognize their potential for intelligence development through effort, persistence, and learning. This gathering, aptly titled “A Day with the Deputy Governor of Lagos State; Dr. Kadri Hamzat,” marked the launch of the “Innovate – EkoSTEAM Mentorship Series,” a groundbreaking initiative by the Lagos State Government aimed at empowering students in the crucial fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).

Represented by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Tolani Sule, Dr. Hamzat emphasized the importance of innovation, urging students to remain curious and question existing norms. “Innovation begins with curiosity,” he stated, encouraging attendees to boldly seek out creative solutions to current challenges. The event not only showcased the state government’s commitment to fostering educational growth but also highlighted the pivotal role that technology and innovation will play in shaping the future.

Advancements in technology, particularly in areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), are enhancing various aspects of STEAM disciplines. Dr. Hamzat articulated that art is evolving beyond traditional forms, integrating digital mediums and virtual experiences. “Science and engineering are leaning heavily on AI to tackle complex issues, and mathematics is the key language that allows us to measure and refine these innovations,” he explained.

The deputy governor further underscored how AI is transforming industries like healthcare and agriculture. For example, in healthcare, AI algorithms analyze medical imagery with precision levels that rival seasoned radiologists. In agriculture, smart sensors and machine learning systems are streamlining processes for sustainable farming solutions. In education, AI-driven platforms are customizing learning experiences, accommodating individual student needs, and providing unmatched accessibility.

Eniola Opeyemi, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Basic and Secondary Education, reinforced the importance of thorough research and investment in education as the state’s strategy to nurture the next generation of innovators. He highlighted that creating supportive environments for exploration within STEM fields is critical and encouraged collaboration among educators, students, and policymakers to foster an atmosphere of innovation.

A session dedicated to student engagement was a highlight of the day, featuring an open dialogue between attendees and their deputy governor, tackling significant issues in STEAM education. The discussions revolved around key topics such as inclusivity, technology’s role in enhancing learning experiences, and cultivating a culture of creativity and entrepreneurship within schools.

As Lagos State champions the importance of education and innovation, initiatives like the EkoSTEAM Mentorship Series set a precedent for empowering future generations with the tools they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. With exciting developments in technology on the horizon, it’s a thrilling era for student innovators in Nigeria.
