Ksh1.5 Billion Boost for University and TVET Students: A Game-Changer in Education Funding!

Funding Boost for Students: HELB Disburses Ksh1.56 Billion in Support

In an exciting development for students across Kenya, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has recently disbursed Ksh1.56 billion in tuition and upkeep loans. This generous funding targets both Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) trainees and university students, marking a significant step in supporting education across the nation.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced this monumental funding on March 18, detailing that the financial aid, which was processed on March 14, has already benefited over 65,000 students. Specifically, 31,263 TVET trainees and 33,863 university students are set to receive these crucial funds, providing them with the financial backing needed to continue their academic journeys.

This latest disbursement is just a part of a larger funding initiative aimed at addressing educational expenses for the 2024/2025 Financial Year. So far, HELB has dispersed a total of Ksh32.7 billion, showcasing the government’s ongoing commitment to nurturing a skilled workforce through accessible education.

Ogamba emphasized that the funding ensures that student and trainee needs are prioritized, allowing them to engage fully with their academic, training, and research commitments without financial worry. Students are encouraged to check their HELB portals for updates on their funding status as they continue their educational pursuits.

The government’s dedication to education was further highlighted by President William Ruto, who, during a visit to Nairobi on March 12, assured students that funds would be available in their accounts promptly. He acknowledged prior challenges in disbursement and expressed confidence in the measures being taken to ensure timely support.

“I understand that there have been challenges with HELB disbursement,” Ruto remarked. “However, I have instructed officials to ensure that these funds reach students without delay so that everyone can access their necessary resources.”

As Kenya continues to navigate educational funding, this significant support from HELB not only provides immediate relief to thousands of students but also paves the way for a brighter future where education is more accessible than ever.
