Excitement is building for the upcoming FNB Botswana Golden Grand Prix, set to light up the National Stadium on April 12. Preparations are in full swing, with event spokesperson Callistus Kolantsho assuring fans that everything is on track for a spectacular day of athletics. Athletes from around the region are set to compete, showcasing a range of thrilling events that highlight the best of track and field.
The festivities will feature a variety of competitions, including the men’s 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m races, along with the 400m hurdles, long jump, shot put, and the electrifying 4 x 100m relays. For the women, action will center on the 100m, 400m, 800m, long jump, and shot put events. As Kolantsho shared with Africazine, many top-tier athletes are in negotiations to participate, and fans are encouraged to be patient as the organizing team finalizes the roster.
“This year we are seeing strong interest from athletes, but we started our preparations a bit late due to various reasons,” Kolantsho explained. “We want to ensure we can attract top talent, which includes securing financial guarantees such as appearance fees and prize money.” With other international competitions vying for the same elite athletes, the organizers are putting their best foot forward to make the Golden Grand Prix a must-attend event.
To ensure preparedness, a dry run is planned for the last week leading up to the Grand Prix. Kolantsho noted that holding this event midweek will allow athletes coming from neighboring countries like Zambia and Zimbabwe to participate in both the dry run and the main event itself, facilitating a seamless transition and ensuring their readiness.
In a significant move to support the future of athletics in Botswana, the organizers are also extending an invitation to school-going athletes. Young competitors who excel will have the opportunity to qualify for the main event, with hopes of invigorating the revival of school sports in the region. Kolantsho stated, “The young talents we discover today are the stars of tomorrow, and we’re thrilled to incorporate them into such a prestigious event.”
As we gear up for this sporting spectacle, all eyes will be on Botswana as it not only celebrates athleticism but also works to foster the next generation of sports talent. Stay tuned for more updates on confirmed athletes and event details as the excitement builds!
