Papua New Guinea and Australia Forge New Path in Skills Development for Labour Mobility
In an exciting development for Papua New Guinea (PNG), Education Minister Lucas Dekena recently engaged in fruitful discussions with representatives from the Australian government. The focus was on enhancing PNG’s labour mobility programme through skill development, which promises to open new employment opportunities for the nation’s youth.
Minister Dekena expressed his enthusiasm about the potential outcomes of his conversation with Jan Hutton, the first assistant secretary of the Pacific Integration and Economic Division within Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. “I’ve asked her to add through the Australian High Commission detailed requirements so that we could look at our school system and vocational centres to build capacity and skill sets that would be recognized in Australia,” he stated. This initiative aims to ensure that young Papua New Guineans striving for employment opportunities in Australia meet the necessary qualifications and skillsets.
During the discussions, Hutton emphasized Australia’s commitment to supporting the priorities and interests of its Pacific partners, PNG included. She acknowledged the impressive resources that PNG offers, highlighting, “We know that PNG is a very resource-rich country, but your most valuable resource will always be your people, and particularly your young people.”
The Australian government has long been an advocate for bolstering PNG’s human resources with initiatives like the Australian Award Scholarships, Labour Mobility Programmes (LMP), and Pacific Engagement Visas. Hutton described the current efforts as a collaboration to increase PNG’s participation in the LMP, focusing on maximizing the benefits of the skills dividend associated with it.
“By aligning Australia’s vocational training assistance, we hope to establish pathways that enable PNG to capitalize on employment opportunities in Australia,” she explained.
This transformative discourse opens a world of possibilities for the youth of Papua New Guinea, fostering a deeper connection with Australia while emphasizing the importance of skills and education. As both nations work collaboratively, it’s clear that the mutual goal is not just to improve employment prospects for PNG’s youth, but to strengthen regional ties and economic integration.
With these promising discussions at the forefront, all eyes will be on how designated skill-training programmes evolve and how young Papua New Guineans can leverage their talents on an international scale.
