Zimbabwe's Ramsar Conference: A Spotlight on Wetland Conservation
By Tichaona Kurewa
In a significant nod to Zimbabwe’s commitment to environmental conservation, the upcoming 15th Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP15) of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is set to take place in the spectacular surroundings of Victoria Falls this July. This prestigious gathering is expected to welcome over 3,000 delegates from 173 countries, underscoring the global importance of wetland preservation and management.
The Ramsar Convention, recognized as the world’s oldest multilateral environmental agreement, focuses on the vital role that wetlands play in our ecosystems. Recently, Dr. Musonda Mumba, the Ramsar Convention Secretary General, paid a visit to Victoria Falls to assess the preparations for this major event. Her enthusiasm was palpable as she marveled at the readiness visible around the iconic waterfall town.
“I was very excited to come to Vic Falls because I needed to get a sense of the location of the COP, and I must say, I’m impressed,” Dr. Mumba stated. Her visit to the Elephant Hills Resort—a premier hospitality venue—allowed her to explore the facilities that will host the conference, including state-of-the-art conference rooms and exhibition spaces. “It’s looking so exciting, and I know that the world will be impressed,” she added, highlighting the seamless blend of natural beauty and modern infrastructure.
The Zimbabwean government, too, has expressed its satisfaction with the preparations. Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, Climate, and Wildlife, Tedious Chifamba, echoed Dr. Mumba’s sentiments during a recent site tour. “We toured the sites where the tents will be, we toured the hotel itself, and with the presentations we’ve seen, I think we are very prepared,” he said, emphasizing the nation’s readiness to host this international conference.
This year’s Ramsar Convention comes at a particularly meaningful time for Zimbabwe, as Victoria Falls has been officially designated a “Wetland City.” This accolade reflects the country’s outstanding conservation achievements and reinforces its position as a leader in environmental management on the continent.
As nations gather to share knowledge and strategies for safeguarding wetlands, Zimbabwe is poised to shine as a hub of conservation efforts and international collaboration. With its natural wonders and steadfast commitment to the environment, the country is on the right path toward becoming a global model for sustainable practices.
In the context of broader environmental challenges, events like COP15 are crucial. They serve not only to address urgent ecological issues but also to forge partnerships that can lead to innovative solutions. As the world looks toward Victoria Falls, one can only anticipate the impactful discussions and positive outcomes that will emerge from this significant meeting.
