Kampala Flyover: A Century-Long Marvel Now Complete and Ready for KCCA’s Service!

Kampala's New Flyover: A Milestone in Urban Infrastructure

Kampala, the vibrant capital of Uganda, recently celebrated a significant milestone in its urban development journey. On February 19, 2025, the Kampala Flyover Construction and Road Upgrading Project (KFCRUP) was officially handed over to the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA). This million initiative is poised to revolutionize traffic flow in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, addressing long-standing congestion issues.

Ag. Chief Engineer Kitonsa Stephen from the Ministry of Works and Transport led the handover ceremony, marking the project’s impressive 99.75% completion rate. The KFCRUP features a series of vital infrastructure enhancements, including the Clock Tower Flyover—a 584-meter marvel comprising a 366-meter bridge with two lanes. The project also introduces several pedestrian bridges, ensuring safety for walkers in the bustling capital.

Notably, the flyover encompasses an enhanced drainage system, five signalized junctions at critical intersections, nine gantries for traffic signage, and a beautiful water fountain near Pan African Square, adding an aesthetic touch to the urban landscape.

KCCA is well-equipped to maintain this impressive infrastructure, having received a suite of new vehicles, including street sweepers and high-pressure washers, to ensure the roads stay clean and functional. This commitment to upkeep is essential, given the flyover’s projected 100-year lifespan, as emphasized by Allan Ssempebwa, spokesperson for MoWT.

Financial backing for this transformative project came from the Government of Japan, facilitated through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The Shimizu/Konoike Joint Venture executed the construction under the watchful eyes of Nippon Koei and ICS. This international collaboration not only brings advanced engineering techniques to Uganda but also fosters goodwill between Uganda and Japan.

The KFCRUP is expected to significantly decongest Kampala’s Central Business District, ultimately reducing travel delays and enhancing pedestrian safety. In a city known for its lively atmosphere and bustling streets, this project marks a transformative step toward a more efficient urban environment.

As Kampala continues to expand and modernize, projects like the KFCRUP underscore a commitment to creating a city that is not only functional but also safe and welcoming for all its residents. The future looks bright for Kampala!
