In a powerful call to action, Solomon Islands Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Nestor Ghiro, emphasized the critical importance of sustainable ocean management during the opening of the 2025 Honiara Summit. With over 300 delegates, including international leaders and partners in fisheries, gathering at the Friendship Hall in East Honiara, the summit aims to tackle pressing issues surrounding our oceans and marine biodiversity.
Minister Ghiro’s welcoming remarks set the tone for the summit, underscoring a shared commitment to one of the world’s most immediate challenges: the sustainable stewardship of ocean resources. His message resonated deeply as he said, “Your presence here today reflects our united purpose in managing the invaluable resources our oceans provide.”
The focal point of the summit is the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14, which stresses the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources. The theme “Iumi tugeda: Delivering on SDG14.4: Achieving Sustainable Fisheries” is a rallying cry for nations to collaborate and foster innovative strategies to restore fish stocks and protect marine ecosystems.
Minister Ghiro pointed out the pressing need for action, stating, “The health of our marine resources is directly linked to our livelihoods, culture, development, and future.” For small island nations, where fisheries are the backbone of the economy, this is not just an environmental issue—it’s a matter of survival.
The summit facilitates vital dialogues around challenges such as overfishing and the need for sustainable practices, allowing nations to share knowledge and experiences. “Together, we can develop actionable strategies that will not only benefit our nations but the global community,” Ghiro continued, highlighting the interconnectedness of ocean health and community vitality.
Among the esteemed guests are the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, Peter Thomson; FAO Assistant Director General, Dr. Manuel Barange; and various prime ministers from across the Pacific, united in their commitment to marine conservation.
This summit, jointly hosted by the Government of Solomon Islands, the Pacific Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA), and the FAO, signals a turning point in the fight for sustainable oceans. As Minister Ghiro reminded attendees, “Our oceans support our livelihoods, and it is our responsibility to ensure their health for generations to come.”
As the discussions unfold, the focus is clear—innovation, collaboration, and a steadfast dedication to preserving the oceans that nourish us all.
