Strengthening Policing: NCD & Central Police Commanders Enhance Skills at Recent Workshop

In a significant move to bolster law enforcement capabilities, the police station commanders of the National Capital District (NCD) and Central recently wrapped up a two-day workshop focused on logistics and basic prosecution. Held at Tauhava in Central, this workshop was not just another routine event; it was part of a broader initiative to enhance the effectiveness of command operations within the region.

The training was facilitated by the Papua New Guinea-Australia Policing Partnership (PNG-Australia Policing Partnership), highlighting the collaborative efforts between the two nations to improve community safety and security. Acting Assistant Police Commissioner for NCD and Central, Benjamin Turi, expressed his satisfaction with the workshop’s outcomes, emphasizing the value of dialogue amongst the commanders. “The discussions were productive,” Turi remarked, underlining the importance of ongoing communication in law enforcement operations.

One of the key takeaways from the workshop was the urgent need for additional barracks to accommodate more personnel. Turi pointed out that adequate facilities are essential for servicing the growing demands of the community. His call for additional resources aligns with the ongoing drive to ensure that police are well-equipped to handle the challenges posed by an increasing population within the nation’s capital.

NCD Governor Powes Parkop, who attended the final day of the workshop, reiterated his commitment to supporting the police force. He commended the commanders for their dedication to their duties and assured them that the provincial government is ready to collaborate closely to ensure the safety and security of all citizens. “I will do what I can with what I have to support the operations,” Parkop said, reflecting a proactive approach to governance and public safety.

Governor Parkop also raised a vital point regarding funding from the National Government, advocating for a more significant allocation to provincial police operations. With the recent national census expected to reveal a notable population increase, it is crucial that NCD receives the resources necessary to maintain order and security. He believes that the NCD serves as a critical hub for the entire country, positing that when peace prevails in the capital, it naturally sets a positive tone for the rest of Papua New Guinea.

This workshop marks an important step in the continuous effort to enhance police operations in the National Capital District. With a focus on skill development and resource allocation, the collaboration between local authorities and the PNG-Australia Policing Partnership aims to create a safer environment for residents and visitors alike.
