Maximize Opportunities with AfCFTA: Eswatini's Call to Local Businesses
By Bongiwe Dlamini
In an empowering event commemorating International Customs Day, Mancoba Khumalo, the Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Trade of Eswatini, delivered a compelling message to local businesses. He emphasized the necessity for entrepreneurs to seize the immense opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). With the potential for expanded market access, it’s a game-changer for the nation’s economy.
Held at the Eswatini Revenue Service (ERS) Auditorium, Friday’s celebration was not just a routine observance; it was a clarion call for innovation and growth in trade. Minister Khumalo expressed his commitment to actively identifying pathways that enhance trade prospects for Eswatini businesses. “We are dedicated to negotiating market access through facilitating crucial trade agreements,” he stated.
One of the major advantages of these agreements is the reduction of customs duties for products imported from Eswatini, making them more competitive in foreign markets. The minister highlighted that the country benefits from a broad array of trade agreements with significant regions, including the European Union (EU), Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). Most notably, the AfCFTA uniquely unites 55 African nations, boasting a collective population of around 1.3 billion people ready to explore Eswatini products.
Khumalo urged local businesses to hone in on their existing strengths and improve production efficiencies. He believes that by enhancing capabilities in key industries, Eswatini can leverage its competitive advantages in the newly opened global market. With less bureaucracy and trade barriers among member states, businesses can find ways to flourish in this dynamic trading environment.
The AfCFTA is not just an agreement—it’s a transformative opportunity that embodies Africa’s economic potential. As Eswatini embarks on this new chapter, local companies are encouraged to adopt innovative practices, collaborate with each other, and truly capitalize on this historic moment.
By aligning with the AfCFTA, Eswatini holds the promise of shared prosperity, where small and large enterprises alike can thrive on a continental stage. It’s a perfect time for local entrepreneurs to rethink their strategies and explore collaborations that could propel them into new markets. As the world watches, the energy and initiative from Eswatini will surely be one of the stories to follow!
