“Transforming Lives: How One Foundation Brings Hope to Cataract Patients in Zagora”

In an inspiring move aimed at bolstering healthcare accessibility, the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity is launching its 2025 proximity medical campaigns in the picturesque region of Zagora, Morocco, from January 17th to 19th. This initiative is tailored to enhance primary healthcare services for populations residing in remote areas, particularly focusing on specialized surgical procedures such as cataract surgeries.

As part of a broader strategy rolled out in November 2023, the Connected Mobile Medical Units program has been pivotal in delivering healthcare to remote corners of Morocco. This latest campaign is dedicated to the municipalities of Fezouata and Taghbalt, where residents have been identified as needing cataract interventions through ongoing medical monitoring conducted in the Tinfou El Berrania and Ait Mnad areas.

Over the course of this campaign, a remarkable 150 ophthalmic surgeries are scheduled, each one offering a new lease on life for those afflicted with cataracts. Regaining sight not only improves individual quality of life but also empowers communities by enabling greater participation in daily activities and local economies.

Omar Moussa Abdellah, head of the medical-humanitarian center at the Foundation, emphasized the collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Protection in making specialized medical assistance more accessible to vulnerable segments of the population. The Foundation has coordinated substantial logistical and human resources for this operation, including the deployment of five specialized medical units equipped with surgical suites, an ophthalmology clinic, a biology department, and a well-stocked pharmacy—essential facilities to ensure patients receive comprehensive pre- and post-operative care.

Equipped with a dedicated team of 50 professionals, including medical specialists and social workers, the campaign reflects an admirable spirit of solidarity. Volunteers from the Moroccan Association of Medical Solidarity (AMMS) also play a crucial role, contributing their expertise to this noble cause.

Patients benefit from thorough medical consultations to assess their readiness for cataract surgery, alongside ongoing medical monitoring and free medication post-surgery. This compassionate support doesn’t go unnoticed; numerous beneficiaries have expressed heartfelt gratitude to King Mohammed VI for his ongoing commitment to improving healthcare access in rural areas.

This campaign follows a successful 2024 initiative, which saw four cataract surgery campaigns across various provinces, resulting in 398 surgical procedures and 833 ophthalmic consultations. It’s a testament to the progress and dedication that Morocco is demonstrating in elevating the standard of healthcare, especially for its rural populations.

Zagora, a region steeped in cultural richness and natural beauty, stands as a beacon of hope for healthcare reform in Morocco. As we look forward to the outcomes of this campaign, it’s clear that initiatives like these not only restore sight but also illuminate pathways toward improved health and well-being for many.
