Students Trek the Kokoda Track to Promote Awareness for Upcoming Convention

In a heartwarming initiative, seven dedicated students from the Light Bearers Singing Ministry are embarking on an ambitious trek along the scenic Kokoda Track. Their mission? To raise awareness about a significant convention taking place in Popondetta this month. Under the aegis of the Papua New Guinea Adventist Tertiary Students Association, these young ambassadors hail from various Adventist educational institutions based in Port Moresby and Central.

For student Ajenta Farari, this journey is not just a physical challenge but a platform to address pressing social issues, particularly around law and order in their communities. Farari shares, “Our aim is to create awareness while making our way to the convention in Popondetta. It’s vital that we reflect on these challenges as we continue with our educational pursuits.”

The group set forth on their expedition on November 27, starting their day bright and early at 8 AM from Port Moresby. After a brief journey by vehicle, they began their hike at Owers’ Corner. Their first night was spent at Ioribaiwa Ridge, followed by a stay at Brigadier Hill, and passing through the picturesque Efogi village. Each stop offers not just rest but an opportunity to connect with the local culture and learn from the rich history of the track.

Looking ahead, the next stop is Alola, and then they will continue on to Kokoda, where the convention will take place. This bi-annual event, as mentioned by Farari, is an essential gathering for their community, uniting over 80 members this year alone.

Among the students is a diverse lineup of representatives, including Ansley Maire from Oro, Lai Lai from Central, and various others actively participating in their educational journeys at institutions like Mt Diamond Secondary and the Pacific Adventist University. Farari mentioned that while two members of their group are seasoned hikers from Oro, the rest are experiencing this trek for the very first time. This mix of experience adds an exciting dimension to their journey, emphasizing teamwork and resilience.

Though some of their peers will travel by plane, those adventuring on foot have demonstrated remarkable resourcefulness in preparing for the trek, relying on their ingenuity to gather supplies and gear. This trek embodies the spirit of volunteerism, camaraderie, and a desire to foster positive change in their communities.

As they move forward on this life-changing journey, these young students not only challenge themselves physically but also stand as advocates for social awareness, blending education, community service, and a love for the beautiful landscapes of Papua New Guinea.

Stay tuned for more inspiring stories as these students continue their trek along the historic Kokoda Track, carrying with them both hope and purpose.
