Get Ready for Better Healthcare: Lagos State Pushes Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme

The Lagos State Government is calling on its residents to take full advantage of the Ilera Eko health insurance scheme, a vital initiative designed to ease access to quality healthcare. At a recent press conference celebrating Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day 2024, Dr. Emmanuella Zamba, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), shared inspiring updates on the scheme’s growth and future goals.

Since its launch, the Ilera Eko scheme has achieved remarkable success, enrolling over 1.1 million residents. Dr. Zamba reported that just a year ago, enrollment was at 923,000, reflecting an impressive increase of 229,455 individuals over the past year. This demonstrates a growing recognition of the benefits that health insurance can provide to families navigating healthcare needs.

In an effort to broaden the understanding of health insurance’s importance, Dr. Zamba announced plans for a dedicated radio station. This initiative aims to educate Lagosians on the advantages of the Ilera Eko scheme, ensuring that the community can access vital information and resources. The government is also encouraging residents to share insights and feedback, fostering a collaborative approach to improving healthcare services.

To enhance service quality further, LASHMA has introduced a customer care team made up of 30 dedicated members, ready to assist residents with any issues that may arise. The commitment to effective support is a cornerstone of their mission to make health services more accessible.

This forward momentum was reinforced earlier this year when Lagos State Governor Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu signed an Executive Order to implement the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Act, making enrollment in the Ilera Eko scheme mandatory for all residents. This important legislation is a critical step towards ensuring that everyone in the state has access to essential healthcare services without financial burden.

Dr. Zamba emphasized that universal health coverage is a fundamental human right that allows individuals to obtain necessary medical services. “A healthier population contributes to a more robust workforce and resilient communities,” she remarked, emphasizing the long-term benefits of investing in health.

Lagos State has made significant strides since the introduction of the Lagos State Health Scheme Law in 2015, with Ilera Eko serving as a vital safety net for residents at risk of catastrophic health expenses. The Permanent Secretary also outlined various growth initiatives, including partnerships with healthcare providers to ensure diverse and effective service delivery.

The Eko Social Health Alliance (EKOSHA) was highlighted as a crucial player in reaching vulnerable populations, demonstrating Lagos State’s commitment to inclusivity in healthcare. With a total of 1,152,455 residents enrolled since the scheme’s inception, initiatives are in place to further expand and enhance the program’s reach.

As Lagos State forges ahead with its healthcare reforms, the community is encouraged to see the Ilera Eko scheme not just as a safety measure, but as part of a broader commitment to sustainable health and well-being for all its residents. Ensuring that no one is left behind is not just a goal, it’s a promise.
