Kigali's Public Transport Takes a Festive Turn: 24/7 Bus Service for New Year's Celebration
As the festive season approaches, the city of Kigali, Rwanda, is rolling out an exciting initiative that will delight night owls and revelers alike. Starting from December 31 until January 5, public transport buses will operate around the clock, ensuring that the city’s residents and visitors can safely and conveniently travel during this vibrant time of year. This announcement comes from city spokesperson Emma-Claudine Ntirenganya, who emphasized the importance of this move in light of increased nighttime travel demands as the current year draws to a close.
“Kigali is known for its vibrant culture and lively celebrations, and we want to ensure everyone can enjoy these festivities safely,” Ntirenganya stated. The all-night service will facilitate transportation for those celebrating the end of the year and welcoming the New Year. Travelers can expect an increased availability of buses during these key dates, significantly enhancing the public transport experience.
However, it’s worth noting that while the full 24-hour service kicks off on December 31, only select routes will continue to operate overnight after this date. The Nyabugogo-Kabuga and Downtown-Remera-Kanombe routes were specifically chosen due to their high passenger volume, providing essential connectivity throughout the city. Ntirenganya encourages passengers to take advantage of these services, especially during late-night hours, to ensure their safe return home.
To streamline the boarding process, commuters are reminded to have their smart cards ready when accessing the bus services. Yet, in a commendable effort to enhance inclusivity, transport operators have been instructed to assist passengers without smart cards, offering alternative payment methods, including mobile money. This flexibility ensures that everyone can participate in the celebrations without worry.
Additionally, city officials are keeping the options open: if the demand for these bus services surges, more buses will be deployed to ensure every passenger is accommodated.
