In a heartwarming initiative aimed at enhancing the lives of its senior citizens, around 200 elderly residents aged 80 and above from Awkuzu, located in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, recently availed themselves of a special medical outreach program. This event was orchestrated by the Awkuzu Traditional Council in celebration of the “Ugo Okenye 2024” ceremony, a tradition that honors and uplifts the elderly community.

The medical outreach took place at the Comprehensive Medical Center, Awkuzu, where many beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude for the care provided. Among them were notable individuals like Mr. Emmanuel Akabike, a local medical practitioner, Chief Vincent Mofunanya, and Mrs. Okpamma Ndu, who at an impressive 117 years old, stands as the oldest woman in Awkuzu. She, along with other participants, described the day as remarkable, noting the significance of such support for the elderly in their community.

Professor Augustine Odili, who leads the outreach team and serves as the Special Adviser on Health Matters to Igwe Professor Charles Anikweze, emphasized that the elderly are often vulnerable and sometimes overlooked. He underscored the importance of programs like this one, which not only provide medical assistance but also a sense of community and recognition for the valuable contributions senior citizens have made.

The event was further established as a progressive step towards improving the well-being of the elderly, aligned with the transformative goals of the National Senior Citizens Centre in Abuja. Dr. Emem Omokaro, the Director General of the center, expressed her support for such initiatives, emphasizing that they resonate with the center’s vision of creating a supportive environment for our aging population.

As we look towards the future, it’s encouraging to see communities come together to celebrate and uplift their elders. The efforts in Awkuzu reflect a broader commitment to honor those who have paved the way for future generations, showcasing the essence of community spirit and the importance of caring for one another.

With the positive response from the residents and the involvement of local leaders, this program not only serves the immediate needs of health care but also fosters a nurturing environment where the wisdom and experiences of elder citizens are celebrated. By investing in our senior citizens, communities like Awkuzu are making valuable contributions towards a more caring and inclusive society.
