On December 13, 2024, the Sustainable Communities Network (SCN) hosted an inspiring graduation ceremony for its Basic Digital Computer Training program at the Digital Platform Centre (DPC) in Freetown, Sierra Leone. This festive occasion honored 14 graduates who completed the program, made accessible to all free of charge.
Amid the celebration, the event featured a range of speeches from prominent figures in the community. Operations Assistant Isha Sappa Sesay kicked things off with a warm welcome, while trustee Samuel Thomas provided motivating words. Graduates’ representative, Theresa Taylor, captured the collective experience, reflecting on the journey and expressing gratitude for the skills acquired.
SCN’s Director of Operations, Thomas Myanawa, delivered a powerful keynote address that underscored the impact of digital education on community development. “It’s an honor to stand here today as we recognize your tremendous achievements,” he said, celebrating the graduates for their dedication and resilience. Myanawa emphasized the importance of the training in enabling participants to become change-makers in their communities, saying, “You symbolize the future of innovation and inclusivity, which are the pillars of our vision at SCN.”
Myanawa also highlighted the collective effort that made this initiative a success, stating, “Investing in people creates stronger, sustainable communities.” He urged graduates not to view their certification as an end, but as a stepping stone in their lifelong learning journey. “Adaptability and creativity will be your best allies in the dynamic digital landscape ahead,” he advised.
Special recognition was awarded to SCN’s leadership team during the ceremony, including a virtual acknowledgment of Dr. Blango, the SCN CEO and Chairman, and the Director of Development, Peter Menjor. Their unwavering support played a crucial role in the success of the program, and Myanawa expressed deep gratitude for their commitment.
In her reflection, graduate Theresa Taylor noted, “Today marks a new chapter in our lives. The knowledge and skills we gained here lay the groundwork for future successes.” These sentiments echoed among her peers, who felt empowered to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
The Digital Platform Centre is an innovative initiative that aims to strengthen digital literacy across Sierra Leone. Launched earlier this year, the DPC aligns with SCN’s broader mission to create functional and sustainable communities. Graduates receive a National Technical Certificate (NTC) in Basic Computer Literacy, ensuring a well-rounded understanding of crucial digital competencies.
The program runs through three cycles each year, with upcoming sessions scheduled as follows:
– Cycle 1: April 21 – June 27
– Cycle 2: July 1 – August 31
– Cycle 3: September 1 – November 30
In addition, SCN offers a 30% discount on fees for local residents of Cole Farm, as part of its commitment to fostering inclusivity. With complimentary internet connectivity provided during training, SCN is effectively breaking down barriers to digital education.
As the graduates set forth from the ceremony, Myanawa charged them with being torchbearers of change, reiterating that their success illustrates the power of empowerment through education. With moments of joy and reflection shared among graduates, facilitators, and guests, SCN’s dedicated efforts towards digital education and sustainable community development continue to shine bright.
This uplifting event marks a significant milestone not just for the graduates but for the future of digital literacy in Sierra Leone, contributing to the country’s socio-economic progress and ongoing digital transformation.
