Northern Ocean Secures Major Contract with Equinor, Boosting Operations in Norway

In an exciting development for the maritime and energy sector, Northern Ocean Limited (NOL) has just announced a significant contract win for its rig, the Deepsea Bollsta. This deal, awarded by Equinor, marks a new chapter for the company and promises to enhance its operational footprint in Norway. The contract is set to begin in the latter half of 2025 and boasts a firm duration of two years, complemented by five optional one-year extensions. This deal not only underscores NOL’s capabilities but also signifies its growing importance in the global offshore drilling market.

The financial implications of this contract are substantial. It adds approximately USD 335 million to the company’s backlog, alongside an additional USD 80 million earmarked for client-specific upgrades and integrated services. Following these developments, NOL’s total firm backlog will surge to approximately USD 465 million.

In a collaborative endeavor, NOL will partner with Odfjell Drilling to ensure a seamless transition of the Deepsea Bollsta from Namibia to Norway. This operational shift reflects the company’s commitment to executing projects in a safe and efficient manner, as it continues to build upon the successful completion of previous work in Namibia.

Moreover, NOL has signed a letter of intent with an undisclosed operator for one well work in Norway that will be completed prior to kicking off the Equinor contract. This proactive approach highlights NOL’s strategic planning and its adaptability in an ever-changing industry landscape.

Arne Jacobsen, NOL’s Chief Executive Officer, expressed his enthusiasm regarding this landmark achievement, stating, “This marks a turning point for the Company to secure a longer-term contract in Norway with a client like Equinor, which adds more than USD 415 million to the revenue backlog. This provides a solid foundation for NOL to further develop the company and continue to build backlog, enabling the next steps of the company strategy.”

This recent win not only validates NOL’s robust business model—where its superior assets are combined with Odfjell Drilling’s operational expertise—but also signals a promising future for both the company and its stakeholders. As countries across the globe strive to enhance their energy capabilities through sustainable practices, NOL stands well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for high-quality drilling services.
