Enrollment Soars at Alcorn State: A 3% Increase Sparks Excitement!

Alcorn State University has reasons to celebrate as it kicks off the 2024-2025 academic year with an impressive boost in enrollment! The university joyously announced that over 700 new students have chosen to call Alcorn their academic home, contributing to a total unduplicated enrollment of 2,995 students. That’s a meaningful 3.5% increase over last year’s numbers, which stood at 2,894.

This year alone, Alcorn welcomed 720 new students, comprising 579 first-year students and 141 transfer students. Dr. Tracy M. Cook, president of Alcorn State, expressed pride in this growth, emphasizing the university’s dedication to providing a high-quality education in a nurturing environment. “Our enrollment growth showcases a focused effort on enhancing the student experience,” Cook stated, thanking the Admissions and Recruiting Team as well as the support staff for their tireless efforts in attracting bright minds to Alcorn.

A significant part of Alcorn’s appeal is its strong commitment to STEM education, with more than half of its students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Dr. Edward Rice, vice president of student affairs, shared his enthusiasm about this upward trend, noting it reflects Alcorn’s mission to serve a diverse population and create an ambiance where every student can thrive.

A notable aspect of Alcorn’s student body is its diversity—students hail from 36 states and 13 countries! With 34% of the students being first-generation college attendees, the university is proud to foster an inclusive environment. Furthermore, the student-to-faculty ratio stands at an impressive 16:1, enhancing personalized learning and mentorship opportunities.

The university is also expanding its dual enrollment program—169 high school students are now engaged in college-level coursework, representing a substantial 19.68% growth from last year. De’Martinez Simmons, interim director of admissions and recruiting, commented, “This enrollment increase is a testament to the trust our community places in us and our commitment to providing diverse academic programs and resources.”

With popular academic programs in biology, business administration, general studies, agricultural science, and psychology, Alcorn State remains a beacon of higher education. The geographical reach of the university extends to states including Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and beyond, attracting students not just from within the U.S. but also internationally from countries such as Australia, Botswana, Cameroon, Canada, and Colombia.

As Alcorn State University continues to grow and evolve, it stands as a shining example of educational excellence in the African American community and beyond. Stay tuned for more updates on their exciting journey!
