In a significant development in the energy sector, Ithaca Energy has successfully finalized a monumental £754 million (3 million) acquisition of nearly all of Eni’s oil and gas production assets in the UK. Announced back in April, this all-share transaction is a strategic move that positions Ithaca as one of the largest independent energy companies operating in the North Sea.
As a part of this deal, Eni, the Italian energy giant, has secured a substantial stake of approximately 38.7% in Ithaca Energy. Luciano Vasques, the former Managing Director of Eni UK, has been appointed as the CEO of the newly merged entity, indicating a strong commitment to steering the company towards growth and innovation in the energy landscape.
This acquisition not only enhances Ithaca’s portfolio substantially but also aligns with Eni’s broader strategy of focusing its investments in specific geographic areas. Known as Eni’s ‘satellite’ strategy, this approach has already seen the establishment of Azule Energy, a joint venture with BP concentrated on Angola, and Vaar Energi, a collaboration with a private equity firm in Norway’s oil sector. Such moves highlight Eni’s commitment to optimizing its operations for better investor appeal and market dynamics.
The terms of the deal state that Ithaca will acquire all of Eni’s oil and gas assets in Britain, except for its East Irish Sea resources and carbon capture and storage initiatives. Following the completion of this transaction, the Tel Aviv-listed Delek Group’s stake in Ithaca has shifted from a significant 82.7% down to 50.7%, reflecting the changing dynamics within the company.
In an official statement, Eni reiterated its dedication as a long-term, supportive shareholder of Ithaca, affirming the strategic nature of their partnership. The energy sector is poised for exciting changes as companies like Ithaca and Eni explore new opportunities for growth and sustainability in an ever-evolving energy market.
Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops, especially regarding how this acquisition could shape the future of energy production in the North Sea and beyond.
