Astronaut Captures Spectacular Meteor Explosion Over Egypt from ISS

In a dazzling display of cosmic beauty, NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick has shared an incredible time-lapse video that captures the moment a bright green meteor, or bolide, exploded in the atmosphere, illuminating the night sky over Cairo, Egypt. This captivating footage comes from the International Space Station (ISS) as it made its way above the historic city, marking another fascinating chapter in our understanding of celestial events.

On September 2, around 8:12 PM EDT, Dominick was engaging in a photography session aimed at capturing the Milky Way’s core when he inadvertently recorded the brilliant fireball streaking across the sky. This stunning occurrence is a reminder of the spectacular phenomena lurking in the universe, which can sometimes surprise even seasoned astronauts. Dominick shared his findings in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) on September 3, garnering excitement and awe among space enthusiasts and laypeople alike.

The meteor explosion can be classified as a bolide—an exceptionally bright meteor that detonates in Earth’s atmosphere, often generating sonic booms. The event was so intense that it outshone the stars and the moon momentarily, leaving onlookers and scientists fascinated by its brilliance. Dominick noted, “They both thought it was a meteor exploding in the atmosphere—a rather bright one called a bolide.”

For those intrigued by astronomy, bolides are not just spectacular; they serve as opportunities for scientific study as they help us understand more about our atmosphere and the meteor showers that visit our planet. The video, comprised of 20 individual images taken within the Cupola module of the ISS, has two versions: one slowed down for detail, allowing viewers to fully absorb the moment of the meteor’s explosion, and a quicker version where the flash is only briefly visible.

Dominick, currently on the SpaceX Crew-8 mission, has become known for his stunning space photography, which includes capturing awe-inspiring vistas of auroras and other meteor phenomena during his time aboard the ISS. His work not only highlights the wonder of space but also serves as an important reminder of the scientific marvels occurring above us every day.

As we continue to explore our universe, the images shared by astronauts like Dominick offer a unique glimpse into the extraordinary events that take place beyond our planet’s surface. It fosters an appreciation for the beauty of the cosmos and sparks curiosity about the mysteries of space.

This event highlights the growing role of space exploration in our modern world, emphasizing that with every pass above Earth, there is a chance to uncover something remarkable. So, the next time you look up at the sky, remember that there’s a vast array of cosmic wonders just waiting to amaze us.
