NamWater Prioritizes Reliable Water Supply for Okakarara Residents
In a proactive move, Namibia’s national water utility, NamWater, is diligently working to restore a consistent water supply to Okakarara and its surrounding communities, including Ombinda and Elandspan. The disruption in service, which began on September 10, stemmed from necessary maintenance on the Okakarara-Elandspan pipeline, as stated by NamWater’s spokesperson, Lot Ndamanomhata, on Monday.
The initial shutdown was instigated as a strategic measure to manage energy costs during water transfer from the Kombat Mine. Ndamanomhata explained that the water supply is mainly sourced from the Grootfontein-Kombat Omatako canal system and then treated at the Okakarara purification plant. This facility acts as a lifeline for both the town and the broader rural area’s water needs.
Residents have experienced some variability in water availability over the past weeks, with the water transfer resuming on September 12, followed by ongoing fluctuations until stabilization was noted around September 19. While temporary inconsistencies undoubtedly raised concerns within the community, NamWater has been quick to assure residents that its dedicated technical teams are already on the ground, working around the clock to stabilize water pressure and supply levels.
“We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation during this time,” Ndamanomhata stated confidently. Regular updates will be provided to keep everyone informed about the situation as it progresses.
The challenges haven’t been limited to Okakarara. In the Ohangwena Region, a power outage on September 22 affected water pumping capabilities, impacting several communities. Fortunately, services have resumed, and water levels are gradually improving. NamWater is in close collaboration with NORED, the regional electricity distributor, to resolve the power supply issues comprehensively.
Ndamanomhata extended his gratitude to the resilient residents of both regions for their understanding and reassured them that the utility is committed to preventing future interruptions. “We are focused on implementing effective solutions and maintaining open communication with all stakeholders to ensure a stable and reliable water supply,” he affirmed.
As NamWater continues this vital work, the community can look forward to a steady supply of clean water, essential for daily life and overall well-being. With such commendable efforts underway, Okakarara is not only weathering the storm but will emerge stronger in its capacity to deliver vital resources to its residents.
