As the highly anticipated Dangote Refinery gears up for its petrol distribution debut on September 15, 2024, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) is rolling out a robust plan to keep traffic flowing smoothly along the Lekki-Ajah corridor. This initiative highlights the Lagos State Government’s commitment to ensuring road safety and efficiency for all commuters.
In a recent announcement made by Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department at LASTMA, the agency disclosed that they have been equipped with advanced tow trucks, emergency tools, and medical ambulance services. Personnel will be strategically deployed in the area to address traffic-related challenges swiftly and effectively. “The Lagos State Government has conceived a comprehensive traffic management strategy to be implemented to guarantee uninterrupted traffic flow along the Lekki-Ajah corridor,” Taofiq stated via the agency’s official X (formerly Twitter) account.
The government’s proactive approach is crucial, considering the influx of vehicles expected due to the refinery’s operational activities. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, confirmed that LASTMA is well-prepared with state-of-the-art equipment and trained personnel to oversee traffic movement. “LASTMA has mobilized advanced tow trucks and emergency response teams to promptly address anticipated potential traffic disruptions,” the statement clarified.
Leaders in transportation have assured residents of Lekki-Ajah that comprehensive preparations are in place to mitigate any expected traffic surge. Meanwhile, tanker operators and all road users are urged to adhere strictly to traffic regulations. This is essential not only for their safety but also for the seamless operations of the Dangote Refinery.
In preparation for the fuel loading set for September 15, NNPC Ltd. has already deployed over 100 trucks to the refinery’s fuel loading gantry in Ibeju-Lekki, with many more on the way. Devakumar V.G. Edwin, Vice President (Oil & Gas) of Dangote Group, shared insights during a recent Nairametrics X Space event, noting that the refinery is capable of loading up to 2,900 trucks daily. This significant activity is set to invigorate the Lekki Free Trade Zone while the government has introduced an electronic call-up (e-call-up) system aimed at regulating truck traffic to prevent congestion on the Lekki-Epe corridor.
Initially scheduled to launch on August 1, 2024, the e-call-up system has been postponed for further enhancements to ensure its smooth implementation. Once operational, it is poised to drastically improve traffic management in the area, ultimately benefiting businesses and residents alike.
