Chakwera Touches Down in the USA for an Impactful UNGA Experience!

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has made a significant debut at the global stage this week, arriving in New York City, USA, to participate in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Accompanied by key figures including Malawi’s Ambassador to the USA, Esmie Chombo, and Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Lieutenant General Clement Namangale (Rtd), Chakwera’s visit marks a pivotal moment for Malawi as it seeks to amplify its voice and engage diplomatically with the international community.

While in New York, President Chakwera will engage in several high-profile events aimed at addressing pressing global issues. He is set to participate in the Summit of the Future and a high-level meeting focused on the Miombo Forest Declaration, underscoring his commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship. The president will also take part in discussions on antimicrobial resistance—an area of growing concern worldwide.

One of the key objectives of Chakwera’s visit is to deliver a national statement during the UNGA’s general debate, where he intends to rally global support for Malawi’s developmental priorities. By articulating Malawi’s aspirations and challenges, the president aims to secure enhanced international cooperation to bolster the country’s growth trajectory.

In addition to addressing critical global matters, the president is keen to advance Malawi’s economic partnerships through bilateral discussions with other heads of state, leaders of international organizations, and potential investors. This engagement is crucial as the country aims to implement its Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining (ATM) strategy, aligning closely with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) slated for achievement by 2030.

Chakwera is also set to host the Malawi Partners Conference 2024, focusing on food security—a significant issue for the nation. This event will bring together investors and stakeholders to explore sustainable solutions to ensure long-lasting food security in Malawi. Last year’s UNGA session was particularly fruitful for Malawi, with Chakwera signing a significant agreement with the US Government through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

As world leaders convene this year under the theme, “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations,” Malawi is poised to make its mark and leverage these discussions to position itself as a proactive player on the international stage.

Stay tuned for updates as President Chakwera continues his mission to champion Malawi’s interests in these critical global discussions.
