Celebrating Young Creatives: The Galway County Anti-Litter Poster Competition 2024

In an inspiring display of creativity and environmental awareness, young artists from across Galway gathered at County Hall to participate in the annual Anti-Litter Poster Competition organized by Galway County Council. This year, the event was particularly noteworthy, with the competition attracting nearly 1,000 entries, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a litter-free environment in our beautiful county.

The competition showcased the impressive talents of both primary and individual entrants, with themes focused on the necessity of litter prevention, the impact of litter on Galway’s stunning landscapes, and best practices for using public bins responsibly. The goal was clear: to inspire a collective responsibility for maintaining a clean environment.

Ava Belton, a bright third-class student from Kiltartan National School, was recognized as the overall winner of the ‘Primary Schools’ category. In the ‘Individual’ category, Claudia Coyle from Ballinderreen stood out with her creative approach. Both winners exemplified the enthusiasm and awareness that the competition sought to foster among young people in Galway.

Councillor Ollie Turner, the Leas Cathaoirleach of Galway County, remarked, “The competition winners truly represent the talents and dedication of the hundreds of entrants. Picking winners was no easy feat as each poster was a personal work of art reflecting their unique perspectives on littering.”

Liam Conneally, the Chief Executive of Galway County Council, also praised the competition as an essential component of their ongoing anti-litter campaign. “This initiative is crucial in encouraging everyone to contribute to a clean Galway. We recognize the influential role of schools and individuals in spreading environmental awareness and want to thank all participants for their dedication,” Conneally stated.

The Director of Services for Rural & Community Development, Jacqueline Carroll, added that the competition allowed students to enhance their learning experience by merging creativity with vital environmental education. “The response has been overwhelming and inspiring,” she noted, highlighting plans for future competitions in 2025 as part of continued efforts to promote a litter-free Galway.
