Celebrating 59 Years of Joy: Thailand’s Beloved Hippo Mae Mali Cheers Her Milestone Birthday!

Mae Mali, the beloved hippopotamus at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand, recently turned 59, and what a celebration it was! The event, held on September 8, 2024, drew a crowd of animal lovers, families, and zoo staff who gathered to honor this extraordinary creature, which has become a staple of joy and delight over the decades.

The festivities kicked off at 9:30 AM, led by Mr. Narongwit Chodchoi, the zoo’s director. Attendees were treated to a delightful atmosphere filled with laughter and warm wishes. A giant birthday cake, crafted from Mae Mali’s favorite fruits and vegetables—think watermelon, dragon fruit, apples, and even sweet potatoes—was a highlight of the day. As she made her grand entrance from her pond, the crowd sang “Happy Birthday,” encapsulating the heartfelt moment when Mae Mali enjoyed her delightful feast, soaking in the love from everyone present.

Beyond the birthday cake and celebratory songs, the event had a noble cause. A supporter of the zoo’s wildlife sponsorship program generously donated 20,000 baht to enhance Mae Mali’s care and support the construction of a new home for her, demonstrating an admirable commitment to wildlife conservation and animal welfare. The day also featured activities such as writing birthday messages, engaging fun games, and an exhibition showcasing Mae Mali’s extraordinary life journey, which has inspired many over the years.

Mae Mali’s legacy began in the Netherlands, where she was born at Tilburg Zoo. She made her way to Thailand and has been a cherished fixture ever since. After being transferred from Dusit Zoo in December 2018, she has continued to thrive, caring for over 14 offspring during her time in Thailand. Currently recognized as the longest-living hippopotamus in the country, she could perhaps achieve a world-record title if her health continues to flourish.

As the celebration concluded, the community spirit was palpable. The slogan for the day, “We will care for her as she grows old with us,” resonated with all in attendance. The bond between Mae Mali, the zoo, and its visitors represents the importance of wildlife conservation efforts and the joy that animals bring to our lives.

In a world increasingly focused on environmental awareness, events like Mae Mali’s birthday serve not just as entertainment but as a poignant reminder of the importance of caring for wildlife.

For those who want to witness Mae Mali and the love surrounding her, visit Khao Kheow Open Zoo and be part of this heartwarming tale of connection between humans and wildlife.
