Osimhen can help Nigeria win AFCON – Peseiro

Head coach of the Nigerian national football team, Jose Peseiro believes Victor Osimhen has what it takes to help his side clinch the title at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.

The 25-year-old striker was top scorer in the qualifiers with 10 goals. He was also crowned CAF Player of the Year (men) in December 2023.

Peseiro wished that Osimhen’s stats will be a valuable asset when Nigeria faces other countries at the African tournament.

He spoke at a dinner organised to celebrate Osimhen’s coronation as Africa’s best player at the team’s training base in Abu Dhabi on Friday night.

The coach said; “From our team, he (Osimhen) was the highest goal scorer during the qualifiers. Of course his teammates helped him to achieve that. I hope and wish he wins the highest goal scorer and help us win the tournament”.

Former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi has listed Nigeria among the African favourites to win the title at AFCON.

Mikel told CAFonline that Super Eagles, three-time AFCON winners, can challenge for the title at the competition next year.

“We are always favourites, this is every time we go into the tournament and it’s no different this time. Everyone knows that we are one of the favourites – not the massive favourite but definitely one of the favourites,” the ex-Chelsea midfielder said.

The Super Eagles will kick-off their campaign on January 14 against Equatorial Guinea before facing the hosts four days later in what will be a repeat of the 2013 edition quarter-final that saw them overcome Cote d’Ivoire 2-1.
