AFCON: Nigerians are eager to see you win – Sports Minister charges Super Eagles

Minister of Sports Development, John Owan Enoh, has urged Nigeria’s Super Eagles to win their matches at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.

Following the qualification for Round of 16, the minister said Nigerians are too eager to see Jose Peseiro’s men beat subsequent teams and advance to finals in Ivory Coast.

Enoh gave the national team the charge to improve on goal-scoring while addressing the players and coaches during a Zoom meeting on Wednesday, January 24.

He also urged the Super Eagles stars to forget about posts, pictures and comments on social media for now as they prepare to take on Cameroon in the AFCON knockout stage on Saturday.

He said; “Please listen to the coach [Jose Peseiro]. Don’t lose focus, let your eyes remain on the ball. I will further suggest that at a moment like this forget about social media. Don’t even look at your WhatsApp messages anymore so that you don’t lose concentration. You are going to find a lot of comments by Nigerians that are too eager to have you continue to win.

“So don’t get distracted, remain focused and use this tournament to make additional names for yourselves. Imagine what it would be like if you win our fourth AFCON and go down in our sporting history as those young men that gave our country a remarkable achievement by winning the AFCON for the fourth time.

“It will be an unforgettable moment. Our next match is against Cameroon and I think that we should use these every match to improve ourselves more and more.”
