Nigeria Entrusts Mint with e-Passport Production

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has released a statement declaring that the future production of e-Passports will be handled domestically. Once the country’s current production contracts expire, the printing of Nigerian e-passports (and any related documents) will be handed over exclusively to the Nigerian Security Printing & Minting Company (aka “The Mint”).

The Nigerian Mint was founded in 1963, and is primarily
responsible for printing the nation’s currency. The company has reliably hit
its production milestones since recovering from a performance downswing back in
2014.

Nigeria itself has since made a strong push to introduce biometric technology across a wide range of institutions. The country registered biometric information as part of its 2018 census. It has also issued biometric ID cards to students, and required biometric registration for security guards.

However, the country has faced criticism from the UN and other organizations for its inefficient and decentralized data collection infrastructure. The decision to bring passport production in-house could help to address that problem, consolidating the collection of biometric information under a centralized national umbrella.
