KUALA LUMPUR 13 September 2021 – The United Parcel Service (UPS), one of the world’s leading shipping and logistics companies, has been appointed as the official logistics partner for the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.
Malaysia will be among over 190 nations and organisations taking part in Expo 2020 Dubai themed ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ which will take place from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022. The partnership will see UPS implement its full suite of logistics services to the pavilion, which will provide a unique platform to showcase Malaysia’s rich cultural and biological diversity and sustainable development efforts on the world stage throughout the six-month event.
As official logistics partner for Expo 2020 Dubai, UPS has been instrumental in assisting with the construction of some of the most aspirational feats of architectural design in Expo history, building on an already established legacy of delivering world class logistics to some of the biggest and most complex events ever staged, including the 2012 London Olympics.
Malaysia’s participation in the Expo is led by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation with MGTC as the implementing agency.
MGTC Chief Executive Officer Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor said, “A large number of items will need to be transported to Dubai before the Expo begins and shipped back to Malaysia when the event ends. It is therefore critical to protect the integrity of the shipped items throughout this whole period. As an established and trusted logistics company, we are confident that UPS will provide us with peace of mind.”
“We are honoured to be the official logistics partner for the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, which is another example of how UPS is moving the world forward by delivering what matters,” said Matt Parkey, president of South Asia for UPS.
“We are excited to help Malaysia showcase its unique cultural identity on the world stage. Over the last 30 years, in addition to providing support for a number of landmark global events, including Expo 2020 Dubai itself, UPS has continued to expand the range of services and solutions that help Malaysian businesses unlock new opportunities globally and we look forward to continuing to do so.”
“Under our arrangement, UPS has extended preferential rates and special packages to the Malaysia Pavilion and participants of its programmes, who will include both government and business delegates,” added Shamsul Bahar. “Items that UPS will ship include retail and merchandise items, crafts, costumes and props, musical instruments, souvenirs as well as personal items of the Malaysia Pavilion team and cultural troupe who will be stationed in Dubai for seven months.”
The Malaysia Pavilion, themed ‘Energising Sustainability’ will be hosting 26 thematic weekly trade and business programmes. These will be led and supported by 21 ministries, 69 agencies and five state governments and UPS services will also be used to transport interior design and audio visual installations for the Malaysia Pavilion’s contractors.
“Malaysia Pavilion is also happy to note that UPS has undertaken an initiative to offer its customers net zero carbon shipping for its express services. This goes well with Malaysia’s theme on sustainability for the World Expo,” added Shamsul Bahar.
“As a global logistics and transportation company, we have a responsibility to continue to create solutions that help all of our customers operate in a more sustainable way,” said Parkey.
“The pavilion’s net zero carbon approach aligns perfectly with UPS’s target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Working with like-minded partners is key to building a more sustainable world. UPS customers looking to minimise their footprint can do so by using the UPS Carbon Neutral shipping solution, which provides the option of paying a small fee to offset the CO2 produced by a shipment; contributions are then invested in conservation projects around the world.”
The Expo is held every five years and was originally scheduled to be hosted last year. However, it was postponed due to challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The pandemic has been an enormous challenge for businesses of all sizes in every part of the world, but there are also opportunities as we begin to take the first step towards recovery. We are committed to continuing to work closely with our partners and customers of all sizes in Malaysia to provide the support, service and reliability they need to achieve their global growth ambitions,” added Parkey.
