Aster opens its first oncology center in Dubai

Responding to a strong demand for cancer screening and treatment, Aster Hospitals UAE on Monday launched its first full-fledged oncology department at its Al Qusais branch in Dubai.

The new center offers highly specialized cancer care, with an emphasis on multidisciplinary treatment, Aster said, adding that it can also accommodate all types of insurance, including those in the lower segments.

The service can take care of about eight chemotherapy patients at a time. For now, he will focus on medical and surgical oncology.

The grand opening was led by Alisha Moopen, Deputy Managing Director of Aster DM Healthcare; and Indian actress and cancer survivor Mamta Mohandas.

“Early detection of cancer is important to ensure the best outcome of treatment. There was a need to integrate technological advances and spread awareness of better and cost-effective treatment options, ”said Dr Sherbaz Bichu, CEO of Aster Hospitals and Clinics in the United Arab Emirates.

As part of the new service, the hospital has also set up a “Tumor Board”. It includes a group of doctors and other healthcare providers from different specialties, who will meet regularly to discuss cancer cases and share their knowledge.

The oncology department will be headed by Dr Pranay Taori, specialist in medical oncology, and Dr Sivaprakash Rathanaswamy, consultant in surgical oncology, as well as members of the Tumor Board from around the world.

“With the launch of the Oncology Department, Aster Hospitals UAE strengthens its ability to provide specialist care to the people of the UAE, alongside existing specialties,” said Moopen.

“Recent studies have shown that cancer rates in the UAE are five times higher in young adults than in the US and UK. The incidence of breast cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer and leukemia remains shockingly high. In many of these cases, early detection and surgery can be very effective in slowing the progression of the disease. We sincerely believe that the multidisciplinary approach introduced by Aster hospitals would prove to be of great benefit to patients in the United Arab Emirates, ”she added.

The Aster Oncology Center at Aster Hospital will provide treatment for a variety of cancers – such as breast, lung, liver, colorectal, stomach, prostate, brain, leukemia and other common and rare cancers.

It offers all kinds of treatments, ranging from hormone therapy to immunotherapy, including chemotherapy.
