Abu Dhabi’s NPCC to install monopiles for 640-MW wind project off Taiwan

April 19 (Renewables Now) – Abu Dhabi-based National Petroleum Construction Company PJSC (NPCC) has landed an order to install the remaining monopiles for wind turbine structures for the 640-MW Yunlin wind farm off the coast of Taiwan.

The contract, worth AED 363 million (USD 98.8m/EUR 91.6m), was awarded by Yunneng Wind Power co. Ltd which is responsible for the development of the project.

NPCC received the order after Sapura Energy Berhad announced its withdrawal from the project in February. The Malaysia-based contractor decided to terminate the order for the installation of monopiles at the offshore wind farm following a significant delay in the project that, according to the oil and gas services company, was caused by unresolved technical and operational issues not attributable to Sapura Energy.

The Yunlin offshore wind farm is located in the Taiwan Strait on an area of 82 sq km (31.66 sq mi). As many as 80 wind turbines will generate electricity that will be fed into the Taiwanese power grid via two onshore substations near the cities of Taixi and Sihu.

The first turbine was connected to the grid last November but the completion of the project was delayed by three years to September 2023.

Yunneng Wind Power co. Ltd is a subsidiary of German renewables developer Wpd AG.
