The gabonese president Ali Bongo Ondimba, the victim of a cerebral vascular accident on October 24, spoke out for the first time since the beginning of his recovery, in a video recorded in Rabat, Morocco, and aired on Monday night by the media in gabon and social networks. “It is true that I have gone through a difficult period, as sometimes happens in life,” he said during his New Year’s greetings. The gabonese president is convalescing in Morocco since the end of November.
Ali Bongo appears from the front, the face marked by a squint. His speech is fluid, his head and his hands move slightly. “Today, as you can see, I’m doing better, and I prepare myself to find you very quickly,” said Mr. Bongo.
“This speech is evidence that president Ali Bongo is fully restored. His health problems are now behind him,” said the spokesman of the presidency, Ike Ngouoni. In two months, only a photo of the president and two videos, without sound, shot in Rabat, had been circulated. These images were not reassured many people of Gabon on the physical and intellectual capacities of the president.
The opposition and civil society had asked the constitutional Court to declare a vacancy of power, in accordance with the Constitution. The vacancy has not been declared by the constitutional Court, which has transferred part of the powers of the president to the Prime minister and the vice-president.
The absence of the president, Ali Bongo has also contributed to the internal tensions within the power of gabon, according to political analysts in gabon.
