The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which came into effect on Thursday, May 30, represents an important potential for Africa and Morocco, one of the few African countries has a ministry dedicated exclusively to the continent.

The Secretary of State to the Minister of Industry, Investment, Trade and Digital Economy, in charge of investment, Othman El Ferdaous, very convinced of the relevance of the establishment of the AfCFTA, a new integration tool.

For El Ferdaous, who takes part in the 8th meeting of the African Union (AU) trade ministers in Addis Ababa, beyond Morocco, the AfCFTA provides practical and pragmatic answers to “economic and logistical fragmentation”, which suffers Africa. “The main evil of Africa is the economic and logistical fragmentation (…) but with 54 governments, 54 legislations and 54 commercial approaches, this AfCFTA agreement is decisive because it provides practical and pragmatic responses to this fragmentation, through new continental coordination mechanisms,” said the State Secretary.

Morocco pleads for “greater participation of African economies in global value chains, with concrete proposals that serve continental integration in all its aspects” brings its “contribution to the building of continental logistical integration through the new development model of the southern provinces, notably through the 77 billion dirhams infrastructure plan, which aims to create a logistics and economic corridor between the Mediterranean and West Africa, to to put the markets of Dakar, Abidjan and Lagos within reach of containers of the first port of Africa Tanger Med”, he added.

Moreover, Morocco which participates in the conclave of trade ministers of the AU which began its work, Friday, is very active in the last settings preceding the launching of the operational phase of the AfCFTA scheduled for July 7 in Niamey in Niger at the extraordinary summit of the AU.

The meeting will focus on several issues related to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The ministerial meeting will also review the post-launch implementation plan for AfCFTA, as well as the evaluation report on the hosting of the Permanent Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area. Ministers will also consider reviewing the report of the 8th meeting of the Committee of Senior Officials of Commerce. This ministerial meeting was preceded by the holding of the 8th meeting of the Senior Officials of Commerce in Addis Ababa, the aim of which was to review the report of the 15th Negotiations Forum. The meeting of Senior Trade Officials focused on the review of the post-launch implementation plan for AfCFTA, the preparations for the launch of the operational phase of this Zone and the side events, the points relating to origin, and the prohibition of exemptions and refunds of duties and taxes.
