75% of watermelons imported by Spain in 2018 came from Morocco

In 2018, Spain imported a total of 94.58 million kilos of fresh watermelon from 250 companies. 74.57 percent of this came from Morocco. This has been revealed by data processed by Hortoinfo and supplied by the statistical office Estacom.

Spain paid a total of 54.37 million Euro for the purchase of watermelons from other countries. The average price per kilo was 0.575 Euro.

Over the past ten years, imports from Morocco have increased by 3,554.4%, going from 1.93 million kilos in 2009 to 70.53 million kilos in 2018, which is more than 36 times as much. These purchases were made by 183 Spanish companies. Spain paid a total of 42.34 million Euro to Morocco, with an average price per kilo of 0.60 Euro.

Senegal was the second most important country of origin for Spanish watermelon importers in 2018. Imports from this country amounted to 13.28 million kilos worth 6.89 million Euro. The average price per kilo was 0.519 Euro and the purchases were made by 9 Spanish companies.

The third largest supplier was Brazil. Last year, 18 Spanish companies imported 2.94 million kilos of watermelon from this country worth 1.75 million Euro, paying an average price of 0.596 Euro per kilo.

Italy stands fourth in the ranking, having supplied 2.85 million kilos to 11 Spanish companies. The average price was 0.191 Euro per kilo, as Spain paid a total of 546,649 Euro for those Italian watermelons.

The fifth place was for Mauritania. In 2018, this country sold a million kilos of watermelons to Spain worth 124,662 Euro. The average price was € 0.124 per kilo.
